Citadel + Compagnie’s Artistic Director, Laurence Lemieux and dancers Luke Garwood and Daniel Gomez have just returned from the inaugural Embarriarte Festival in Guanobo, Cuba.

While they were there, they taught company repertoire Soudain l’hiver dernier, the iconic duet by our resident choreographer, James Kudelka. The mandate of the festival was to bring meaningful art back to Guanobo, art that was not for tourists, but for local members of the community.

Citadel + Compagnie was the only international company in attendance, and over the course of 4 days, taught 16 Guanobo residents Kudelka’s work. C+C dancers participated in the opening night performance, and performed the work as an installation with seven Cuban performers, transforming Kudelka’s duet into a nonet.

“The dancers were incredible. They were passionate and connected to their bodies,” says Artistic Director, Laurence Lemieux who was moved by the level of artistry of both the trained dancers and the construction workers, plumbers, and doctors who embraced Kudelka’s work.

“They loved James’ piece because it speaks so much about human connection,” she says. “It really resonated.”
